I've checked and as far as I can tell, DNS is working (I can manually pull the TXT records from with dig on the zimbra machine as the zimbra user) and sa-update when run locally with the -D flag returns no bin]$. In his case it looks like he had a DNS issue that was preventing sa-update resolving the updates URL.
